October is the window treatments safety month
When we think of all the precautions we take to make our home the safest for our children, we often overlook window cords as a potentially serious risk. Why Window Covering Safety is so Important
Window coverings safety is often overlooked because, for the most part, we don't usually think about how important it can be. When you have young kids (and/or pets) being aware of these risks will save their life. According to the report of the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC):
- When children become entangled, strangulation can occur in less than a minute.
- Window cord strangulation is often silent, so parents or caregivers nearby may not realize that a tragedy is unfolding.
- On average, about nine children age 5 and younger die every year from strangulation in window blinds, shades, draperies and other window coverings with cords.
- About 200 incidents involving children up to 8 years old due to strangulation hazards on window covering cords from January 2009 through December 2020, according to CPSC data.
- Injuries levaried from a scar around the neck, quadriplegia and permanent brain damage.

The CPSC Acting Chairman Robert Adler lately stated that “The safest option when young children are present is to go cordless.”
How to Keep Your Kids Safe
Window coverings can be a danger to children, especially those who are small and crawling on the floor or climbing into them. The following tips are recommended by CPSC and will help you keep your little ones safe while around windows:
- Do not place furniture near windows. This will make it easier for a child to climb or fall on a window.
- Go cordless!Using cordless window coverings is the best solution in homes with children under age 9 years. This is actually the law for child care facilities, so why not use it in your home?
- If you already have corded window shades, make sure the cord is out of sight and reach of you kid, hiding it behind the shades. You can also order a retrofit kit at www.windowcovering.org.
- Pull it tight! Continuous-loop pull cords should be pulled tight and anchored to the floor or wall with a tension device.
- Properly install your window coverings Be sure cord stops are properly installed and adjusted to limit movement on inner cords on blinds and shades.
